Explanatory Asymmetry in Non-Causal Explanation

چکیده

The problem of explanatory asymmetry remains a serious challenge for non-causal accounts explanation. This paper proposes novel solution, and it does so by appealing to the theoretical context in which an explanation is offered. develops dependency explanation, focusing specifically on Alexander Reutlinger’s Counterfactual Theory Explanation recent work Marc Lange Lina Jansson. It defends idea that nomological possibility with respect global theory right constraint shows how this breaks apparent symmetry counterfactual dependence source problem. solution appeals context, version contextualism required.

Are Symptom Clusters Explanatory? A Study in Mental Disorders and Non-Causal Explanation

Three experiments investigate whether and why people accept explanations for symptoms that appeal to mental disorders, such as: “She experiences delusions because she has schizophrenia.” Such explanations are potentially puzzling, as mental disorder diagnoses are made on the basis of symptoms, and the DSM implicitly rejects a commitment to some common, underlying cause. Do laypeople nonetheless...

Factors in Causal Explanation

The construction of explanations is a key process in human understanding, having many applications for internal tasks such as learning through to external tasks such as diagnosis and image interpretation. In this paper we introduce ve orthogonal dimensions along which any explanation task can be characterised and show how their identiication gives rise to a new model of explanation construction...

Causal Status and Explanatory Goodness in Categorization

Much research (e.g., Keil, 1989; Murphy & Medin, 1985; Rips, 1989) has emphasized the critical role that domain knowledge plays in categorization judgments. Recent instantiations of this view (e.g., Ahn, et al., 2000; Rehder & Hastie, 2001) have focused on characterizing how causal knowledge supports categorization decisions. We suggest that a more satisfactory account of categorization can be ...

Explanatory Inquiry and the Need for Explanation

Explanatory inquiry characteristically begins with a certain puzzlement about the world. But why do certain situations elicit our puzzlement (or curiosity) while others leave us, in some epistemically relevant sense, cold? Moreover, what exactly is involved in the move from a state of puzzlement to a state where one’s puzzlement is satisfied? In this paper I try to answer both of these question...

Causal Explanation and Manipulation

Causal explanation proceeds by citing the causes of the explanandum. Any model of causal explanation requires a specification of the relation between cause and effect in virtue of which citing the cause explains the effect. In particular, it requires a specification of what it is for the explanandum to be causally dependent on the explanans and what types of things (broadly understood) the expl...
